The costs of waste disposal services & What’s free?

Some waste disposal services are payable, others are free of charge. For customers required by law to have a waste arrangement in place, the waste disposal fees are based on the waste management charge approved by the regional Waste Management Board of Joensuu.

The basic fee is charged in connection with the first waste disposal invoice of the year.

The basic fees charged from customers cover the upkeep of the ecopoints, collection of hazardous waste, waste disposal advisory services and the operating costs of the Waste Management Board.

Area waste collection fee

Area waste collection points are intended for collection of combustible waste.

They mainly serve leisure homes and holiday apartments. Additionally, permanent homes may also be signed up to utilising an area waste collection point, if they generate a small amount of waste, the property is situated in a very remote location or sharing a waste container with others is not feasible. In such cases, please contact our customer service.

The area waste collection points are locked, and you will get the first access key to your nearest area waste collection point free of charge.

Prices payable at waste sorting centres

Self-service waste sorting centres Kontiokaari, Myllynkaari and Uuronkaari

Kontiokaari Self-Service Waste Sorting Centre in Joensuu is open every day 6 am to 10 pm. The types of waste that can be disposed of for free are accepted there on weekdays, Mon-Wed from 1 pm to 7 pm and Thu-Fri 9 am to 3 pm.

Myllynkaari Self-Service Waste Sorting Centre in Ylämylly, Liperi is open every day 6 am to 10 pm. The types of waste that can be disposed of for free are accepted there every Tue from 2 pm to 6 pm.

Uuronkaari Self-Service Waste Sorting Centre in Kontiolahti will be opened in 2026. It will be open every day 6 am to 10 pm. The types of waste that can be disposed of for free are accepted there every Mon from 3 pm to 7 pm and every Thu from 9 am to 1 pm.

All waste loads are weighed. The disposal price of a sortable waste load is determined based on load weight. The scale weighs at an accuracy of 20 kgs.

The disposal price of sortable waste is 153,32 euros per tonne, to which the weighing charge of 12.51 euros will be added. At Kontiokaari for disposal of a load of garden waste, only the admission fee of 10.12 euros will be charged. The prices include a value added tax of 25,5%.

Free of charge at waste sorting centres

Households may bring the following types of waste to any of our waste sorting centres free of charge:

Discarded electrical appliances and lamps
Hazardous waste
Treated wood < 1 m³
Wastepaper
Clean glass packages
Clean carton packages
Waste glass, waste porcelain and waste crystal glass, less than 25 litres
Wearable clothes and shoes and usable bags and textiles densely packed in plastic bags.
